Dodge Repair: durango, memory reset, excessive load

Question
hello, my wife was driving her 2000 dodge durango and it over heated she pulled over and called me,, after i got there she said it was making a noise,so i assumed it was the water pump, changed the water pump filled with coolant and there was a leak, after removing the radiator shroud,i found that the noise was the electric fan had some how gotten into the radiator alittle and that was the noise,, ok after fixing radiator putting everything back together filled backup no leaks, but it wont idol, could i have the main fan to tight?? or what could it be,was fine before this happened,,, thanks

Answer
A tight engine cooling fan would not cause this problem as the tension is self adjusting. There are two possibilities for your concern that come to mind. First, that the PCM tried adjusting the idle speed to compensate for the overheating and needs to have it's memory reset. You may be able to accomplish this by disconnecting the battery for 2 hours and just before reconnecting it touch the battery terminals together. Sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't. The other possibility is that there is an excessive load on the drive belt, caused by another component, i.e. alternator P/S pump or A/C compressor. Try removing the belt and see how it idles. Check the other pulleys for tightness while you're at it.
