To answeryour first question. The only thing that will reliably fix a leaking gasket is to replace the gasket. The overheating issue can be a bit difficult ot diagnose. To check if the fans will work, start the engine and turn on the A/C, if the cooling fans come on you'll know that the fan circuitry is intact. If they do not, then you need to check all the fuses and relays in the under hood fuse panel.
