QuestionI need to change the headlight switch on my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 truck. I don't know how to take apart the dash or replace the switch. Everytime I try to look it up I come up with instructions on a Dakota. Are they the same? Any help with diagrams would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Charlie
AnswerHEADLAMP SWITCH
WARNING: IF THE HEADLAMP SWITCH WAS TURNED ON, WAIT FIVE MINUTES TO ALLOW THE CERAMIC PANEL LAMPS DIMMER RESISTOR TO COOL. IF THE RESISTOR IS NOT ALLOWED TO COOL, IT CAN BURN YOUR FINGERS.
Remove the cluster bezel as described in this group.
Remove the three screws securing the headlamp switch bezel to the instrument panel Headlamp Switch and Bezel Remove/Install
Remove the headlamp switch and bezel from the instrument panel.
Unplug the two harness connectors from the headlamp switch Headlamp Switch Knob and Stem Remove/Install
Pull the headlamp switch knob and stem assembly out to its stop. Depress the release button on the bottom of the switch housing and remove the knob and stem from the switch.
Remove the two screws and the switch bezel from the housing.
Reverse the removal procedures to install.
CLUSTER BEZEL
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the cup holder as described in this group.
Remove the ash receiver as described in this group.
Carefully pry the bezel away from the instrument panel to disengage the retaining clips Cluster Bezel Remove/Install
Unplug the connector from the cigar lighter.
Unplug the connector from the auxiliary power outlet.
Reverse the removal procedures to install.
