Dodge Repair: 2001 dodge ram Auto-shift lever, clam shell, chris answer

Question
QUESTION: Kevin, I have a similar problem with my 01 ram 2500 that you have already talked about. But I have it all apart, and don't understand what you mean as to the fix?? The shifter lever moves freely, withoout engaging the tranny linkage on the outside of the firewall. It seems the coulmn is a sealed unit. What part do I need to buy to remedy this issue?? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Chris Hall

ANSWER: see if its attached at the tranny or if is popped off at the steering column.

QUESTION: Kevin, thank you so much for getting back so quick. If I grab the linkage right at the firewall the transmission shifts manuaaly that way just fine. The "disconnect" seems to be from the shift lever down through the steering column itself. Somewhere inside?? I have the steering wheel off and all the clam shell covers, and cannot see any other moving parts externally. Thanx, Chris

ANSWER: do u have a new or old body style truck?
