Motorcycle Repair: ignition timing 2007 ktm 450 sxf, ktm 450 sxf, valve clearance

i was wondering if there is a way to adjust the ignition timing. I just rebuilt the top end and it i having a hard time starting as well as backfiring while cranking.

Zach,Check the stator backing plate it may have slotted holes where the bolts hold it in place. Some of these can be turned to change the timing. Im not sure if this paticular unit has that capability. Make sure you are starting out with a new plug. Also check the valve lash if the valve clearance is to tight it will back fire also. These engines run about 12.5:1 compression and the valves will seat up into the head and you will lose that valuable clearance to make this beast run good.
