Dodge Repair: Dodge Neon AC, dodge neon, valve work

Question
I have a 2000 Dodge Neon ES with an automatic trans.  The ac is going in and out.  When it works it is really cold and sometimes when I start the car it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I took it in and they said it was 1/2 pound low on freon and recharged it but later that day it stopped again.  Any ideas what this could be?

Answer
This sounds like it's more electrical than anything else.  The clutch could be worn out causing it not to engage or you could have a pressure switch starting to fail on you.

There's three switches on this vehicle that could also fail (a/c cycling, a/c low pressure, and a/c high pressure).  Anyone one of these could fail and basically tell the computer to not make your compressor come on.

The fact that your a/c works GREAT when it wants to tells me that the refrigerant level is right and that the internals of the compressor, a/c lines, and expansion valve work properly.  Still in the mix though is the a/c clutch, those switches and the engine computer itself.

I remember on the early second generation neons there was a wiring problem right at the sensor/switch near the compressor.  You may want to have your mechanic look in to that and even wiggle the wires around to see if the compressor turns off and on.
