Dodge Repair: 2002 dodge neon engine tap, piston slap, dodge neon

Question
i just recently bought a 2002 dodge neon, i'm hearing what it sound like a spark knock. but on th backside lower part of the engine. just checking to see what you might think , and have you came across any thing to do with the neons like this, i had change the plugs already and gapped out to spec.. still the same noise. thank you shawn

Answer
Backside of the engine... could be catalytic convertor rattle but I've not seen alot of them fail on the neons.

Sometimes the lifters can be a little noisy and the engines typically are noisy until it warms up.

Unfortunately, noises are going to be very difficult to help diagnose via the internet.  What I call a knock you may call a tap, a tap could be a tick and a tick could be a click.

The neon motors have been pretty dependable and not known for things like rod and main bearing failure, lifter noise nor piston slap.  There's SOME piston slap when cold but this typically goes away when warmed up.

I would suggest having a mechanic look at it.  Check engine lights, oil leaks, vibrations and such I can frequently be of more assistance.
