Dodge Repair: Overheating, 2000 dodge intrepid, dodge intrepid

Question
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Recently, my engine died with 101,000 miles on it and I had to replace the engine. I was lucky to get an engine with $37,000 miles on it. For the last week, I have been smelling a bad smoking odor that I believe is coming from underneath the hood of my car. I don't smell the odor if I am driving a short distance-about 5 miles or less. I drove to school today which is about 20 miles and I had my defroster on because it was raining heavily outside. Once I parked, I noticed that the cooling light was on and the meter was almost to hot. This has never happened before and it looks like ever since I replaced the engine. One thing is going after the other. What do you think this is and more importantly, how much is this going to cost me because I am a broke college student with no money, still owe on the car and no means of transportation. Please, Please help.
