Dodge Repair: 1999 Dodge Stratus Check Engine light, dodge stratus, strange smell

Yesterday afternoon I got in my car, and when I started it up, the "Check Engine" light came on and stayed on throughout my whole trip (about 15 miles). Also, as I drove, a strange smell started coming from my car. This morning it happened again. Is this a major issue? Can it wait until the weekend, when I'm not working, or do I have to run out and get it fixed today? Thanks!

this sounds like a bad cataliac converter it should be replaced asap it can foul the spark with carbon and then really cost you some money . And i am sure you do not want that to happen .
