RV Repair: I cant find the fuse for the brake lights!, coachmen rv, light fuse

Question
Hi,
I have a 1977 Coachmen RV, on a Dodge chassis, with a 318 engine.  The brake lights stopped working a while ago, and I can't find the fuse to replace it!  The blinker and the tail lights work fine, and I found a fuse box under the dash, but nothing is marked "brake", so I'm not sure if it located somewhere else...  Someone I spoke with said that the lights themselves might have fuses built in - have you ever heard that?  That seems a little odd to me, but this is the first time I've owned an RV.

I am also curious about how difficult it is to install a roof-top a/c unit on my RV.  The electrical system is updated, with a breaker box - is it only a matter of running a wire to the box?  Are the on/off and temp switches on the unit accessible from the inside of the RV, or would a switch need to be installed as well?

Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Hi LHO:
Sometimes the older motor homes can be pretty tough to work on, too many people have been in there! The brake light switch is either above the brake pedal or at the but end of the master cylinder. Usually there are two wires with one wire bringing the 12 volts DC to the switch and the other running to the tail light. I have never seen a light with a fuse in it (45 years) so I doubt that you have one. Locate the switch and the check for voltage with a probe light then chase it back until you find the problem. The brake light fuse is the same that runs the dash lights so if you have those the fuse is OK. Good luck.
