I have a 1991 Dodge Caravan, 2.5L 4 cylinder, auto transmission (3 speed).  It is really eating up the gas and my mileage is about 8 miles to the gallon.  It is puffing a lot of black smoke out the exhaust and I know it's running rich.  I have replaced the rotor and bug, spark plugs, plug wires, O2 sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, and Idle Air Control Sensor.  I honestly don't know what else to check for.  Also periodically, the butterfly on the carb will stick open due to the buildup of carbon or something and when I spray carb cleaner on it, it releases immediately.  I have changed the oil and filter regularly, every 3000 miles.  The longest it has gone unchanged is 3600 miles.

Also the transmission appears to slip, especially when cold, in the mph range of 40 - 60.  If I accelerate too hard, it acts like you popped it into neutral, but if you let up on the gas, it feels like it went back in gear.  Any speed above 60, it will not slip.  I have changed the fluid and filter, and there are no leaks.  I have checked the linkage and that too is fine.  

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated for either question.

Thank you for your speedy reply.  I wanted to make sure I understood your answer correctly.  The fuel engt, is that the fuel injector you are referring to?  If so, what is the best way to clean it?  Should I remove and use carb cleaner, or buy fuel injector cleaner that is put into the gas tank?  Or is it just best to replace that?  If it's not the fuel injector you're referring to, could you please tell me which part you are referring to?

i am refering to the fuel rail thire is a serivice a shop can do to clean it is is around 85 dollors this is the best way to go . but you can out the engt cleaner in the tank it will help over time . but not over night.
