Dodge Repair: engine repair or replace?, camshaft, rears

Question
2000 Caravan SE with a 3.3L V6, 67,000 miles. It apparently has a broken camshaft.  The three rockers on the left side of the front bank operate, the three on the right don't.  My mechanic wants to repair the engine rather than replace it with a rebuilt or low-mile salvage engine (says it will cost less), but I'm skeptical.  If it wasn't simply a defective camshaft (as my mechanic believes) am I setting myself up for another major repair in the future because the cause of the problem hasn't been addressed?  What course of action do you recommend?

One other aspect to this story is the timing of the camshaft break.  It happened two days after I got the van back from that same mechanic.  I took it in for front brakes when I was going out of town, and (after getting the OK from my wife)he wound up replacing all 4 brakes (the rears only had 17,000 miles), giving it a tune-up (I thought plugs lasted 100,000 miles?) and an oil change (which it probably needed).  He blamed some parts price issues on a new young employee, but I wonder if that same kid might have started the engine before oil was put back in or something.  Do you think it's possible there's a connection or is it just coincidental that the failure was 2 days after the van was in the shop?

Because I'm currently having "issues" with him, my mechanic said he'd "work with me" on the price of the camshaft replacement, but I'm more interested in making sure the proper repairs are done.  Should I let him do the work or should I take the van somewhere else like a dealership?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my multi-faceted question!
