Dodge Repair: Steering gear replacement, plymouth voyager, splined shaft

Question
I have a 92 plymouth voyager. In the manual it says to lower sub-frame and remove pinch bolt betwwen u-joint and intermediate shaft.OK.It also says that the u-joint stays with the steering gear. The only thing I see that can be removed is a round pin which holds the u-joint to the steering gear.I also cannot get the sub-frame to lower more than 1 inch with all four bolts out. Please help me before I scream

Answer
The u joint your talking about is the roll pin at the gear this will come off the rack and you will see just a splined shaft. the shaft is cut in a way that you can only put it on one way.

The sub frame could be held up by the stearing shaft sometimes you need to pry down on it with a big pry bar.

Also.....  Very inportant.  If your car has a air bag you need to lock the stearing wheel in place.  If you let it turn while not hooked up to the rack you will ruin the airbag clock spring.  About a $150.00 part.

Let me know how you do.
