Dodge Repair: auto exhaust sensor, fuel mileage, luck steve

Question
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup, 4-wheel drive, 5.9 liter. My problem is the check engine lite comes on. I am 99% sure it's the sensor on the catalytic converter or exhaust. Exhaust system seems to be in good shape. Is there a way to unhook exhaust sensor myself without effecting other sensors? If so, would you tell me how to do it?I have made no repairs to exhaust system since I bought truck new in 1997. Have no other problems with truck. Don't want to replace exhaust system untill I have to. Help me if you can. Thank you.

Answer
Bill,

The sensor you are talkign about is the O 2 sensor, That sensor is the way the computer determins how much fuel to give the motor. there is no way to unhook it and have the light stay off.  But you dont need to replace the whole exhaust system to fix it.
Have you put the truck on a computer to find out if the light is on for that sensor?
It could be something else or even a bad wire doing it.

If it were my truck I would have the codes checked and find out what is turning the check engine light on. The autozone parts places around here will do this for free.

Once I found out what the code was , then you can get a price on what it would take to fix it. If it is the O2 sensor , Replacing it could give you a boost in fuel mileage. this would pay for the repair over a short time .

Good luck,

Steve
