Eagle Repair: I have an automatic 84 Eagle..., flywheel teeth, main bearing

Question
I have an automatic 84 Eagle DL wagon with a 258 engine.
I recently had the transmission rebuilt. My problem is that the starter can't seem to grab the flywheel to get it started.

It seems to only grab one side on one side.

When I removed the starter to look at the flywheel teeth,I noticed that one side of the wheel can be moved towards the trany, but the other side remains stationary. The starter grabs the stationary side, but seems to slip out right away.

Any thoughts You might have would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Alan

Sounds like either the main bearing or the flywheel itself is to blame for this problem. If the main bearing is shot the flywheel could be moved off center and therefore not engage the starter in certain areas. The other is that when the transmission was refitted the flywheel was damaged and is now rotating out of center. Both ways the transmission will have to come out to investigate the problem further.

Hope this helps
