Ford Repair: No heat sometime, shift model, temperature gauge

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 2001 ford f150 super crew lariatt 4x4. I don't have heat sometimes the heat works sometimes
The truck will have heat when I am driving it and all of a sudden get cold air blowing for awhile then heat again.
It is very sporadic. The temperature gauge reads normal and I have changed the thermostat and flushed the heater core and system. The temperature control switch works because when it is blowing warm air I can turn it to cold and it will blow cold air then, but it won't blow warm air if I try to turn it to warm when it is blowing cold air. Like I said it blows warm or cold air when it feels like it. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks and have a great day, Gary

QUESTION: It has a knob to turn for hot or cold and one for the blower and one for the selection(defrost heater ect...?

ANSWER: you are going to need to replace the temperature blend door actuator. not a real easy job to do but not an uncommon problem. disconnect battery ( This is imperative as you will need to remove the air bag module ) !!!!!1 wait atleastt 15 minutes. remove the lower floor duct cover located on the floor center of vehicle. you will see a box with two connectors going to it. unplug these and unbolt the restraint control module. remove the right hand instrument panel brace. unbolt the left lower brace and position aside. you should then see an air flow duct going to the rear of the vehicle. cut this duct about half way through and fold it back. behind that you will see a white box with 3-4 8mm screws and 1 connector. this is the temperature blend door actuator. replace it. unfortuantley if this is floor shift model you will need to remove the center console. you can also google how to replace this part..take care and hope this helps.. -b-

QUESTION: Hi, Thanks for your quick response as it is getting colder out. will the actuator sporadically change on its own if it is bad. I was wondering if it would stay open or closed if it was bad. It sounds like a bigger job than I want to tackle. Do you know what it would probably cost to have someone do this, just a ball park figure ,Thanks Have a great Day

Answer
it's not a matter of it staying open or closed, what's happening is the actuator is " searching " for the spot you have the knob turned to because the potentiometer inside is worn. it's not as bad as it seems. did you google how to do it ??? probably get get charge 2-300 not including parts.. get back to me   -b-
