Ford Repair: Ford Explorer V8 Eddie Bauer Engine Skipping, new motor?, explorer v8, ford exlorer

Question
My 2006 Ford Exlorer V8 started having trouble accellerating from 45-65 mph a few weeks ago. I took it in to the shop/dealer last week. They first told me the 6 and 8 cylinders were not firing correctly and recommended cylinder coil replacement for those cylinders and a complete tuneup. Today they say they have done that and the 7 cylinder is 'leaking down' and will not seal when a plug is put in. They recommend a new motor for the car at $6900. I am trying to figure out if this is a reasonable diagnosis and prescription and what I should do.

Year: 2006
Make: Ford
Model: Explorer
Engine: V8

Answer
Tim,  I am not sure as how many miles your engine has on it, however if you have cylinder leaking, this is an indication of worn rings.  That indeed will require an engine rebuild/change.  Keep in mind, all old engines will leak, however there is a specs. of how much leakage is acceptable before the engine require rebuild/change.  My recommendation is to have them finish the job, and get a second opinion from a local engine rebuild shop.  They should give you a better indication of the severity and the implication of driving the car as is.

As for the not sealing when the plug is placed, I am not sure this a true statement.  Provided your threads are good and there are no cracks around the plug sealing area, then this is not a true statement.

Good luck, write me back once you checked with your local engine rebuild if you need further assistance.  Thanks!
