Ford Repair: Ford Tauras, heater core, question thanks

Question
QUESTION: My Ford Tauras 2000 defroster defogger is not very effective it works sometime and some time doesn't heat at all, heating is also very slow. I checked thermostat on dashboard the potentiometer is working both direction and good contact.
Basically it works sometime but not all the time and it takes longer time to get little heat.
After driving for 5 miles and say after 10 minutes you feel little hot air is coming and then again after some time cold air starts coming.
Engine is getting normal heating.
Once you start heater both fans starts and works fine but no heat?
What could be the problem?

ANSWER: From what i'm gathering, first i need to know if the coolant bottle is full. if it is the problem your having is that your heater core is plugged. very common concern. if your mechanically inclined. there are two hoses coming from your engine compartment going in to the vehicle. about 5/8 to 3/4" in diameter. once the engine is warm check these two hoses. my guess is you feel one is considerably cooler than the other. if you disconnect these hoses and clamp a garden hose on one end of the tubes coming out of the vehicle. you could flush the heater core yourself. if not- may be best to take it to your local garage. but this is most likely the concern

QUESTION: Thanks Brian,
Coolant Bottle is full.
Both hoses are pretty warm.
I replaced Thermostat (Which was working fine) and flushed entire system.
But no improvements,
Both hoses are pretty same temperature and are pretty hot.
One Tube is coming from the place where Thermostat is installed and other one goes back to Coolant storage bottle? Is that correct? Both are 3/4" hoses?

Answer
still inclinded to believe the problem is in the heater core. when you flushed the system, were you able to seperate these two lines and flush them seperate from the rest of the system. ufortunatley  normal cooling system flush does have the pressure needed to clean out the scaleing that builds up in the core.
