Ford Repair: Ford truck hard to start when hot, gas caps, sensor wires

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1989 Ford F150 with 302 engine and dual gas tanks. When the engine is cold the truck starts up with no problems, but after the engine gets warm it is very hard to start. The engine turns over fine, but it takes numerous attempts cranking it before the engine starts. I was told that the gas caps could be faulty, could this really be the problem?

ANSWER: If it does this on both tanks, probably not. It sounds more like an ignition problem to me. Either the ignition module or coil. Both of which can be removed and tested to find out.

QUESTION: I have replace both the ignition module, coil, temperature control sensor, wires, plugs, distributor cap,and rotor cap and still have the same problem. If I hold the gas pedal 1/2 way down it will crank right up, but if I don't hold the gas pedal down it is hard to crank.

Answer
Check the trouble codes. It is a little different on pre-1996 vehicles, but still easy enough. The holding the gas pedal down half way is troubling. I think that either way you should test the fuel pressure to see what the output is. I could not help but notice that you didn't replace the air charge sensor. It cost about the same, and looks identical to the CTS. I would start there first. Another sensor possibility is the Map, but unlikely. Start next with the Air Charge.
