Ford Repair: 88 escort, obd 1, breather element

Question
QUESTION: James, I hope you can help me. I have a 1988 ford escort. The vehicle stopped running. I took off the air cleaner cover and had a gas and oil in the housing. I replaced the breather element and the air filter. im going to check the gas pressure Friday. The car wont start will crank but no start. I do have spark. What may have caused the gas oil to mix in th air cleaner housing? Have you heard of this before and what was the solution? Thank You in advance. Tom.

ANSWER: I am a little confused by what you are saying. Are you implying that the your model has a carburetor? That particular year model is fuel injected. Perhaps you meant to say 86? instead of 88? Could you clarify? The air filter should be in a box that feeds air to the throttle body. Please clarify.

QUESTION: It is a 88 with a single mini fuel injector. The engine stalled out. Took off the air cleaner cover off and, i call the housing, dont know the exact name, had oil and gas in the bottom, the oil and gas did not fall into the throttle body but was in the bottom of the housing. Hope that helps.

Answer
Start out by changing the PCV valve. That explains the oil. The gas is another animal. You really need to run a compression test on the cylinders. The fuel can be explained within one of two ways. Either you have a bad injector(probable), or TPS. Is the check engine light on? If so, read the codes. Google OBD-1 and you will find many diagrams and descriptions of codes pointingtoa defective sensor.
