Ford Repair: Ford Starter Problem, ford f350, 1997 ford f350

Question
I have a 1997 Ford F350 Crewcab with 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel.  The starter was cranking very slow, and made a grinding noise.  I replaced the starter and it started fine a couple times. I drove it a short distance, turned it off and it would not restart.  The starter does not turn. when the ignition is turned on to start you can feel the starter attempt crank and it makes a click sound.  it seems like something is keeping the starter from cranking.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Sounds like you may have a bad connection or high resistance in the starter circuit. Diesel engines require a large amount of cranking torque, more than gasoline engines. Check all the connections between batteries and starter, and battery ground side cable, and ground  on the engine. If you had a starter that was drawing too much amperage, this could have melted or damaged a connection, cable, or wire. And make sure both batteries are up to par for this engine, a weak battery could cause the same symptoms.
