Ford Repair: Catalytic Converter Air Pipe, air pipe, vehicle speeds

Question
Why do(subject above) products have an air pipe attached to the  Converters? I've had two different reasons given to me. One is that the air pipe keeps the Converter from overheating. The second states that it minimizes exhaust pollution. Perhaps both are correct? However, neither mentioned a possible dual purpose.

Answer
That is part of the air injection system, which aids in emissions reduction. Some systems use this part when cold, others use it at different rpms or vehicle speeds. Has nothing to do with keeping the converter from overheating, heat is what makes a catalytic converter work efficiently. Pumping air into the converter helps it to heat up faster or maintain the temps at working levels.
