Ford Repair: 96 Sable St/Wag 3L V-6 DOHC 107,000 miles, hex bolts, mercury sable

Question
QUESTION: I have a slight leak from the water pump shaft and want to replace the W/P. The W/P has 7 bolts. The top 4 bolts are accessible from the top of the engine but there are 3 more on the underside of the W/P. My questions are:

Q#1 "Can I gain access to the bottom 3 bolts by removing the RFront wheel and the plastic splash pan in the wheel well or must other parts be removed to remove the W/P?"

Q#2 "Are there any tricks or special tools needed that I should be aware of."

Thank you in advance,

ANSWER: i don't think you can reach them by removing wheel and shield-but after pulley is removed you can from top-special tools no just a little patience-loosen water pump pulley bolts before removing belt. if you have to jack up or lower engine to get pump out be sure and use block of wood between jack and engine. good luck.

QUESTION: Mark:
The pulley has NO bolts, it's an integral part of the W/P and it rides on the reverse side of the serpentine belt. It's a DOHC V-6 and the W/P is bolted to its housing from the engine side of the W/P with 7 small hex bolts. Loosening the bolts drives them more toward the middle of the engine compartment. The W/P has seven threaded holes that the hex bolts go into. I think your answer was for a other than a DOHC engine. I hope this helps. I'll await your follow up.
Thanks again,

Answer
sorry about that-you don't remove the seven small bolts you remove the whole housing assembly. here is instruction from alldata i could't get you pictures but look further back and you will see four nuts on studs behind pump this is part of complete housing and is what you remove-you can go to alldata.com and for about 27.00 can subscribe for a year but it is only for one vehicle it cost me over 200 per month you wouldn't believe the info you get it will pay for itself in one repair a lot of times. has good pictures/wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins.
