Ford Repair: Bronco Steering Column, 1988 ford bronco, ford bronco xlt

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1988 Ford Bronco XLT , V8 351.

I was wondering if a steering column could be fixed or is it better to replace the entire steering column. The problem is that the key does not start the bronco. It only goes as far as the on position and will not turn anymore. I have to leave the key in the on position then get out and start the bronco by jumping the solenoid. If it could be done and have instructions+pictures or know where I can get them would be helpful.

ANSWER: Well, I hate to be vague, but it could be a couple of problems. The rod in the column itself could be broken or bent. The quickest fix, however, would be to replace the ignition key switch. This is the assembly that fits into the column and comes with a new key. You should be able to get instructions in a Hanynes manual available at any parts store. Or, you could pick one up online. If neither of these work, try your local library. They usually have Chilton Repair manuals for all make and model vehicles. Just photo copy the pages you need.

QUESTION: I replaced the starter solenoid as well. I was wondering what the next step would be. Thanks for any help Robbie

Answer
Test the small wire going to the solenoid. You will need to do this as the key is turned all the way to the start position to see if you are  getting juice. Sometimes a fusible link at or near the solenoid will burn up. The only other thing would be to replace the ignition switch itself, which is different from the key assembly.
