Ford Repair: 2002 Escape hesitates upon acceleration, escape 2, manual transmission

2002 Escape/2.0/76,000/manual transmission hesitates upon acceleration.  Started about three days ago. The engine light came on two days afterwards. Had it tested was told that I needed to buy spark plugs and air filter, did that.  After mini-tuneup car ran fine, engine light went out.  Next morning car starts hesitating again.

without being there and going by your description it sounds like it is skipping/misfiring-have it rechecked did you do this mini tune up yourself? if so i hope you didn't put bosch plugs in it. sounds like plug (maybe one got cracked being installed it happens) - coil-or wire/boot based on what descrition i have.
