Ford Repair: carb leak, mustang 351, gas fumes

Question
Mark, '69 Mustang 351 carb has a 4mm hole in the top front; a spring loaded cover comes down on it when accel. is pushed, lifts up during idle.  Gas is guzzling from this hole.  Anything I can do but tow it to a garage?

Answer
that should be a hot idle compensator valve what it does is during extended idle on hot days gas fumes can cause idle problems so that valve opens and lets out fumes to keep them from building up to much
which would probably cause a running rich problem if raw gas is coming out you may have a sinking or misadjusted float or sticking needle and seat if you are not familiar with carb repairs take it to a reputable garage but try to find someone to overhaul your carb instead of getting a rebuilt one and if you decide on a new one get a carter they are simple and dependable. good luck.
