Ford Repair: 1984 ford econoline air/smog pump, ford econoline, catalytic convertor

Question
Air/ smog pump. what is it, where does it go, and what does it do? I recently
moved from utah to california.  I had my motor rebuilt in utah where i didn't
have to have emissions tested. I'm in california and was told I have to have it
before they even start the test.

Answer
the air/smog pump mounts on the front of the engine runs off of a belt-basically at times pumps fresh air into the exhaust or catalytic convertor to make it burn cleaner-there are more things involved than just a pump-you need a pump-diverter valve-hoses etc could get costly.
