Honda: Different Tire Sizes, odometer readings, series tires

Question
My daughter has a 1989 Honda Accord LX1 Sedan. The car was originally equipped with P195/60-14 tires. A previous owner replaced those with P205/50-15 tires and 15x6 alloy wheels. We would like to purchase new tires but do not want to pay the price for the "50" series tires. We would like to go to a P196/60-15 or a P195/65-15 but the difference in overall diameter is 1 inch and 1.8 inches respectively. How do I determine if I can get away with this?

Answer
Tom,
If you DO NOT have the original equipment wheels, then you'll most likely need to go to a tire shop and ask the shop supervisor what your limits are for the sizes.  If your question is regarding the tire fitting in the wheel well and/or the speedometer and odometer readings, then you should be fine.  The speedometer is most likely already off a bit.

I personally would go to the tire shop and ask specifically for the sizes you want.  Let him look at the setup you have now and pay attention to his response.  If he indicates that it is possible, then thank him and go from there.

Good luck,
Barrett.
