Ford Repair: steering problem, ball joints, dr sport

97 ford escort 4 Dr sport ---started with loud metal sound in driveway. Then steering wheel shows tendency to be turned left a little when going straight. popping noise when turning both directions. now when left turn the wheels seem to turn too far to left and when driving there is a slow response to turning to right and will jump to left if not careful.

From your description, you may have a badly worn ball joints (both sides ) that causes this steering problem.  The worse situation, you might have a badly worn drive shafts (both sides).  Any how, this is not a drivable car, have it taken care as these joints may come off while driving.
