Ford Repair: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working, vehicle speed sensor, bad cluster

Question
Today, my speedometer and odometer stopped working. Everything else seems to work fine. Transmission is still shifting smoothly and cruise control still works.  I had AutoZone check for codes and its clear.  I checked the wiring underneath around the vehicle speed sensor and everything looks ok.

I haven't driven the van regularly for the past few months and usually just start it and let it run. The battery ran down and I recharged it. The AutoZone guy thought that maybe going through some startup cycles might make it start working again.  Any ideas?

It's a 2003 Ford E-350 Cargo Van with 133k miles on it. Auto trans with the 5.4L V8.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
try bumping the dash right above the cluster while driving pay attention to traffic-if the trans is shifting smooth evidently the pcm is still getting a rpm signal from the trans. could be a loose connection around the cluster.

if that doesn't work or you don't find a problem at the connections you probably have a bad cluster.
