Ford Repair: ABS Warning Light, ford windstar sel, 2000 ford windstar

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 Ford Windstar SEL.  About two months ago, the ABS warning light started coming on when I reached around 50-60 mph.  At the same time, the Traction Control would turn off, and the warning message "Check Traction Control" would come on on the dash.  I took the car to the garage a couple of days ago.  They tell me the problem is a cracked ABS sensor ring (I think that is what it is called) on the front right side.  They say I need to replace the entire front right axle.  Do I?  And if I do, will all replacement brands have the right sensor ring, or is there a specific one I should look out for.  (The garage wanted to charge me $300 for the axle, which seems a bit expensive).  Thanks!

ANSWER: in my area diagnosing the abs light (scan and check) replacing the axle-clearing codes and verifying fix would run around 225 but i am in northeast georgia prices will vary depending on the area you live in-at our garage in lawrenceville that same repair would run around 260-270 because everything in that area is higher-(taxes-rent-employess-insurance) if the garage you took it to has a reputable reputation and do quality work then that may well be a more than fair price-the price i am quoting would be with a rebuilt axle they may be quoting a new one.

QUESTION: Many thanks for the advice. But do you know if it is necessary to replace the whole axle for a cracked ring - or can the ring  only be replaced?

Answer
i have never tried to replace just the ring but it will knock off with a hammer and chisel (gently)and if you can get a new ring heat it with a propane torch then just tap it on while it is still warm
the axle will still have to come part of the way out to do this
