yesterday my car started making a really loud humming noise when i drive.  the noise gets louder the faster i go.  I also noticed today that there is a rattling underneath my car when it is idling.  what can this be? and how much do you think it would take to repair it?

I saw this in the question pool and thought that I would take a stab at it.When noises get louder the faster you go are always bad signs.It could be anything from a wheel bearing to a transmission.I suspect that the rattling are probably connected.Take it to the shop and get an estimate.Most are free and it might help you avoid an accident.I wish that we could be more help,but telling you to go to the shop id the best advice you will get at this time.
