Ford Repair: 1990 Linclon Town Car Battery Light, neutral place, linclon

Question
My alternator smoked! I had to replace the alternator and the wiring harness.  My battery light was on and my lights stopped working.  I took it to a shop and they found a bad ground which fixed the lights. They said the alternator was bad.  I ask them to replace the battery and I re-replaced the alternator.  My light is still on!!! Any ideas?

Answer
Have the battery and alternator tested at a neutral place this time.Let's just say you're local parts store.Hey,it's a free service. If both check out fine, you may be looking at a defective starter, which may have caused the alternator defect in the first place. When you say smoked, are you being literal? That smoke actually came out of the alternator. In general alternators don't do this unless you have reversed polarity(A.K.A. wires crossed or backwards). Was there any service or anything else done to the car before the alternator "smoked"?If the light was still on after you picked the car back up from the shop, they shouldn't have given it back to you.If it came back on after the fact, take it back to them.Sometimes new parts go bad.
