Ford Repair: 87 Ford F150 no resistance when turning key on steering column & doesnt start, starter solenoid, fuse box

Question
James,

I hope things are going OK for you today! I have a 87 Ford F150 and my problem is I no longer have resistance when turning my key. At the same time this problem developed, the old truck stopped starting. When I turn the key the ‘emiss’ & ‘battery symbol’ lights come on (I think this is normal lights for the truck but I can not remember). At first I thought it wasn’t making any noise. I just went out and double checked and I also hear a very quiet wurr then a single very quiet click when I turn the key. It is not the louder repeating clicking I have heard in the past from a dead battery. Headlights and inside truck cab lights are bright so I don’t think the problem is my less than a year old Ebco battery. I turn my key and it turns easily all the way but when I let go, it doesn't spring/turn back slightly anymore. My wife told me I broke it because I have 30 keys on my key ring. Is that true? Anyway, it cranked OK prior to this. I have a volt meter and I've found the fuse box. I haven’t checked any fuse yet. I'm looking for a PDF file containing the online manual for this 87 Ford F150. I may have to resort to a printed manual or book if they still make one for trucks this old. At first I thought I might need to open the steering column and find a spring that may have jumped out of place but it would still crank if it were that simple. I hope this is enough information and yet not too verbose.

Thanks in advance!
Brian

Answer
The more information, the better.First try replacing the starter solenoid. It is located on the fire wall close to the battery. The sounds that you described could be caused by a faulty solenoid.Be sure and disconnect the battery before replacement, however. If indeed the problem is not revolved, then you are probably looking at either having to replace the ignition switch,or the lock and cylinder. As far as PDF goes, you're guess is as good as my own.I would go to you're local library. Most Metropolitan libraries have Mitchell service manuals that you can make copies from.I hope that this helps you out, good luck.
