Ford Repair: air suspension problems, suspension problems, air suspension

Question
Hi Jeff, I have a '97 expedition 4X4 with air suspension. After starting it one day last week the compressor didn't come on and the "check susp" light came on. I tried the obvious, restarting several times, disconnect the bat. but that didn't work. I tried connecting the compressor to 12v and it came on and inflated the suspension, but when I connect the comp. back to the system and start the truck it still won't come on. Also with the passage of a week, when I manually inflate the air suspension, only the front inflates and not the back. Can you help me out? Where is the control module located for this system, and can that be the problem? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ben,
It sounds like you have 2 problems. First I think you need to replace the air suspension relay and check the wires and contacts. It's located behind the right front bumper. It has 4 wires (2 large and 2 small wires). Wiggle the connector while key is on to see if the compressor comes on. Note: ALL doors and rear gate must be closed for compressor to run!!! If it comes on you will need to clean or replace connector. If not, replace relay.
If the rear won't lift, check the "air line splice" under the master cylinder to make sure it is not cracked or broken. It's part of the air line to the rear bags and is a known problem. If broken, see your FORD dealer and get a "air suspenion line splice". The new ones are updated and should last forever. If it's OK you might need to replace the rear bags. Very expensive. GOOD LUCK!!!

Jeff
