Ford Repair: 2003 Ford ZX2 Water Pump, coolant leaks, 2003 ford zx2

Question
Hello,
I have a question about a 2003 Ford ZX2 that my wife has. It has recently started leaking radiator coolant intermittently. I have checked all of the hoses and they seem to be fine. I definitely know that it is coolant because I did the tip of finger taste test and it was definitely sweet tasting. I have noticed that the drip pattern is mainly concentrated right below the area of the water pump on the passenger side of the motor. The first time it leaked was last Sunday...it leaked again this Thursday, so roughly 4 days and 120 miles between leaks. Is it common for a water pump or some part of the coolant system to act this way? She had to drive the car to her parents house yesterday. While she was there her dad decided to take the car to his trusted mechanic to have it checked out. He told her and her father that he couldn't find a single thing wrong with it, so she thinks that its set in stone that nothing is wrong with her car now. If it is intermittent ,and acting like cars normally do when you take them to be looked at, then he of course may not have found anything. I can't seem to explain to her that any mechanical thing can sometimes behave this way given the proper circumstances. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Derick Pickle

Answer
Derick, you have done good by following you're instincts. The car is anything but fine.If she continues to drive the car,the car will eventually overheat and more than likely cause irreversible engine damage. You never want you're engine to run hot.
What you described is what a good manufactured water pump will do before failure. The coolant leaks out of a weep hole during bearing failure.
Take it to another mechanic yourself and tell them what you have told us.I can assure you that they will tell you the same thing.
Good Catch...
