Mitsubishi Repair: Repairs to engine, mitsubishi galant, initial estimate

Question
I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant.  It had some stalling problems where it would
just stop and not start up again until it was taken to a shop.  The latest problem
is an oil leak.  Now the engine smokes if you drive it.  What advice would you
give and can you give a price range for the repair(s) suggested?

Answer
Delyna,
If your car smokes continuously while driving, that usually indicates oil is leaking past the piston rings.  Repairing this can be quite expensive.  There is a lot of labor involved, and the labor and parts cost will depend on the garage you take the car to.  For a job as intensive as this, I would recommend having the dealership give you an initial estimate to repair this.  They may give you a quote between $1500-$1800.  Definitely get more than one estimate before investing any large amount of money in your car.
Good luck!
