While driving, the transmission will shift from first and then hold while the
engine revs before sometimes shifting to the next gear. What are some of the
things to check besides the oil level and filter?

There is a plastic fastener on the throttle body that connects the T.V cable to the throttle body.Sometimes these break.Check the throttle body to make sure the cable is not hanging down.The cable controls the transmission fluid pressure.Other than that,change the transmission fluid and filter.Don't leave   of the little screen that looks like the one that goes in you're kitchen faucet.
