Ford Repair: 84 1/2 cfi/efi rebuild, electronic fuel injection, pressure sensors

Question
I too have an 84 1/2 mustang with that marvelous cfi unit. or is it efi. the air filter housing cover says efi. anyway, i have had constant problems with it since i've had it. when cold it starts right up and runs fine. when i stop and shut it off if i don't wait about a half hour it doesn't want to start. i've done a lot of work to it over the years. about the only thing i haven't done is changing injectors and the TPS. i had it out yesteday and it was fine for a while then it started into bucking and stuttering unless i pressed a little more on the go pedal. on deceleration i have to brake with my foot on the gas or put it into neutral to keep it from dying. i want to keep this car stock so no swap is in the cards. are there rebuild kits for these or do you have any other ideas.
oh, a couple weeks ago i snugged up on the schrader valve and the car ran fine for 2 outings. it would start when hot and run fine all day. to me it seems fuel related.

Answer
Michael-

Yeah...it's CFI.  Technically it is electronic fuel injection, but what most people know as EFI didn't show up on Mustangs until '87.  Your problem sounds to me like a bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensors.  Essentially it measures the pressure created by the intake manifold versus the outside barometric pressure and sends that info to the computer so it can adjust fuel and timing (with the help of a few other sensors).  Bad MAPs are pretty common, especially as cars get older.  Hope this helps.
