Ford Repair: 1992 Taurus transmission problem, heavy sound, transmission problem

Question
I have a 1992 Taurus that I just love.  However, right now it drives only in first fear of an automatic transmission.
During the first drive of the morning it will actually go up to 35-40, which is perfect for me since I don't drive on freeways.

Then when I stop and start again, it will drive at only 20 mph.   It starts kind of a heavy sound.   I keep it under the heavy sound and do OK.

Right now I cannot afford another car.  Do you have any suggestions?   It seems that when I put a little fluid in the transmission it worked better this morning.   I have noticed a leak.

Thanks,

Ellen

Answer
Try a little Valvoline ATF Stop Leak the next time it is low. That stuff is awesome.Keep it full of fluid, but not overfull.Eventually the transmission will go out, especially driving in first gear.Try to keep the rpm's as low as you can to minimize damage to the engine as well.
