Ford Repair: creeking noise when steering, 2000 ford windstar, ford windstar

Question
2000 ford windstar, when steering wheel is turned a loud creeking,slip/stick,rusty noise is heard. After lifting the front end the sound is almost gone now but it sounds like it may be coming from the top of drivers side strut assembly. I disconnected the tie ro end on that side to be sure.
Is this somthing I can lubricate?
If not, is it common to have this loud a sound from a stut when turning?
If I replace it, should I replace complete assembly including the spring and passanger side?
Do I need to collapse the spring with a special tool to replace?

Answer
With noises that are hard to identify, I replace it all.You will need a strut spring compressor.Go to the guys at Advance or Autozone. They have a loaner tool program.Pick up a haynes manual while you are there. This will explain everything you need, and or need to do.
