Ford Repair: Air Conditioning Problem, auto parts stores, ac system

Question
I have been told that I need a new compressor.  If I buy the parts myself for a friend to fix, wxactly what parts do I need to buy.  Is it just the compressor or are there other items I need to buy with it??

Answer
If you still have refrigerant in the system you cannot simply replace the compressor. The refrigerant needs to be removed and captured. No matter what type it is, venting it to atmosphere is not a good thing and most probably is illegal. Once that issue is handled then you can simply replace the compressor. Depending on the model, and the replacement, you may have to swap the clutch from the old compressor to the new one. Other wise there are no other parts needed unless something aside from the compressor is bad. Once the compressor is replaced you have to recharge the system with refrigerant. Both removing/capturing and recharging the system take special tools and knowledge. However, local auto parts stores are now carrying tools and kits for working on your AC system. Check with them on what they have available and other tips.
