Subject   Timing Chain Instalation
Question   I have a 390 cu in motor and need to replace the timing chain since there is about 5 degrees of slop in it.

There is 150,000 miles on the motor. My question is: Is it necessary to replace the sprockets too or can I just replace the chain?

Thank You
Patrick

Answer
Patrick-

Well...I can tell you for sure that I didn't answer your previous question (you're right...a 390 is pretty much a 390), I can tell you that while it's probably best to replace the whole chain assembly (gears included) the chain is the really critical part.  Most timing chain sets come with the gears included so it just makes good sense to change them as well.  However, if you're not able to for some reason then just changing the chain should be ok.  Hope this helps.
