Ford Repair: 98 Ford Contour Temp Gauge, mercury mystique, ford contour

Question
Hi Jason! I just got a Ford Contour SE 2.0L from my father and noticed that the temp gauge seems to be a little high, not out of the (SAFE ZONE)if I was to say on a scale of 1 to 100 the dial would be at 75, even in cooler wether 60s or so I checked the coolant level it's at the proper level. I guess what i'm asking for is what is the normal reading on the temp gauge for for a 98 Contour.

Answer
The gauges on those are pretty strange-- I've seen a few that are on the high side but the temperature is just fine.  To be sure, take it to a shop or parts store to have a scan tool hooked up.  That will tell you the real engine temperature-- when it's fully warmed up you want to see 190 to 215*F.  I have a 95 mercury mystique (same car, different trim) and it does the same thing.  In the safe zone, but just high enough to make a person nervous.  Hope this helps,
Jason
