Ford Repair: air conditioner, r 12 refrigerant, mint condition

Question
We just purchased an old motor home with 1982-83 ford motor and chasis in mint condition less then 50,0000...before we bought it the sellers took the vehicle home and then called us and said that the air was not blowing cold...we told them not to worry we would take care of it...my question is that I am sure that this takes the older freon that has been ban in California and possible every where else...does this mean a new type of unit or is there a freon that is available to use that is EPA approved....thanks for any info

Answer
It will most likely be set up for R-12 refrigerant which is no longer available anywhere due to its impact on the ozone.  You can have the A/C system "retrofitted" to use the new R134A refrigerant.  Check around to find a good shop that will do it for a reasonable price-- it can range from $100 to  over $1000 depending on the vehicle and how much has to be modified and repaired to make the system work with the new refrigerant.
