Ford Repair: transmission cable problem, poor workmanship, cable problem

Question
I had the transmission completely rebuilt on my Ford Explorer (2000) 2 weeks ago. Yesterday the cable leading from the transmission to the steering column shifter failed (I was unable to put the car in any gear other than reverse, you could feel the shifter was floating). What is the most likey cause. I suspect poor workmanship...too much of a coincidence.

Answer
If it failed near the transmission, then it was probably installed wrong.  There is a plastic clip on the transmission end that's difficult to work with sometimes.  However it should have been checked and double checked before leaving the shop.  If it failed anywhere else in the cable, it is unlikely that it is related to the transmission repair.
