Ford Repair: Ranger wont start, intake vacuum leaks, fuel pressure regulator

Question
94 Ranger will not start when it is hot outside, no problems when you use it in the morning or evening. Engine cranks fine, but acts like it isn't getting fuel. Fuel pump and filter were replaced a year ago.

Answer
Hello David,
Have you tried giving it a little throttle when cranking to try to clean it out? I know you aren't supposed to have to do that on an F.I. vehicle, but if it fires up by doing that it is a sign of certain problems. A ruptured fuel pressure regulator can put raw fuel in the vacuum line system after shutoff. It makes the engine too rich on hot startup, and 1/4 to 1/2 throttle usually will get it started. How long is it before you can get it started again? It is possible you got a defective fuel pump too, but not very likely. A bad pump should give you a problem cold, too. Check for intake vacuum leaks and a bad fuel pressure regulator, and feel free to follow up anytime.
I hope this helps, and good luck!  Shaun
