Ford Repair: 98 ford escort zx2 2.0l dohc, timing belt tensioner, zetec engines

Question
i have this vehicle which has eaten 4 timing belts in less than 30 days.  i have had the camshaft pos sensor, the cam timing solenoid, all pulleys and tensioners replace and it still eats the belts off the pulleys.  Please help

Answer
Let me guess- the timing belt "walks" off the edge of the pulleys and shreds at the edges.  There is only one way to cure this and it's a fix that I learned from the R&D department at Gates Belts.  You need, of course, a new timing belt and also a new tensioner and idler pulleys.  Put the belt on as the instructions say and put everything back together EXCEPT the top plastic shield that covers the cam sprocket.  Unplug the coils and crank the engine over with the starter for a few seconds and go look at the belt.  If it stays on center, plug the coil back in and run the engine to see that it stays on center before you install the cover.  If it does start to "walk" you will need to make a small adjustment of the tensioner.  Keep testing different amounts of tension until the belt stays on center.  To make sure it stays EXACTLY on track, you may need to VERY VERY CAREFULLY adjust the timing belt tensioner with the engine idling.  It is a crude and dangerous procedure but it is the only one that works.  Oddly enough, it only happens on 98-99 model zetec engines. Good luck and be safe,
