Ford Repair: 1998 Ford Explorer misfire, bosch platinum, platinum plugs

Question
I have a 1998 ford explorer with the 4.0 sohc just change the plugs and wires 3 months ago. Drove fine, started it today sounded terrible, ran rough, check engine light came on. Checked it at Autozone on code reader, says 2nd and 3rd cylinder misfiring. Looked at plugs and wires looked okay, now what?

Answer
Hey Mario,
On the SOHC motor, 2 and 3 are the hardest to get to (pass. side farthest two back) and are easiest through the fenderwell, over the wheel with the vehicle slightly elevated. I doubt that the coil pack is the problem. Make sure that the wires are snapped on all the way (you kind of feel and hear a "click"), and if not, take them loose and look inside for carbon etc. at the terminal and down the plug. Just because they appear so doesn't mean they are. Also make sure they aren't touching the exhaust. I have seen alot of premature wire failure from improper fastening and looming. Also DO NOT use Bosch Platinum plugs because it will idle poorly and cause premature wire failure also. I recommend Motorcraft parts for best results. Good luck and I hope this helps you!   Shaun.
