Ford Repair: 04 mach 1, good luck man, cylinder misfire

Question
i have a 04 mach1 that when i start to accelerate the motor starts to sputter and then goes away and comes back. also i don't have any check engine lights or codes. So if you have any advice please let me know.

Answer
Hey Brad,
Sounds to me like the engine is misfiring intermittently, which if not setting a code, will be little tougher to pinpoint without a single cylinder misfire code. A misfire code is designated by P030_ (the cylinder number will take the place of the underscore). On that vehicle, cylinder 1 is pass. side front., #4 being the pass. rear. Try to re-create the condition that the misfire occurs under, and keep duplicating that condition until you can generate a misfire code. If you get a P0300, that means the misfire on random cylinders, and it is more likely a severely lean condition(engine not getting enough fuel), or something general to all cylinders(like a crank. position sensor). If you don't have access to the Ford IDS diagnostic system, which is what the dealer uses(and I'm lucky that my shop has it), you might have to wait for the problem to get a little worse. The reason why I say this is because there is a cylinder power balance tool built in to the system. That has been the ONLY way I have been able to pinpoint certain problem cylinders on the coil-over-plug systems. The ignition coils on that design fail regularly, so I am guessing that that is you problem. However, you're problem is not so easy to fix without the proper equipment. Good luck man, and hit me back for any more info, don't hesitate!  Shaun.
